Can a restaurant charge a deposit of 100 0/0 for a reservation for an event? They also want id and credit card

upon making brunch reservations for Easter Sunday, the restaurant faxed a form to me asking for full payment, calling it a deposit, and also wthey want my picture id along with the credit card faxed to them. Is this legal?

yes, I BELIEVE THEY CAN BUT YOU CAN CHECK THE LAWS ON THIS

THANK YOU
Reply:It may be legal but it's bad business. I would NEVER fax my credit card or ID to a restaurant or any other organization. This smacks of potential identity theft. I'd find another restaurant -- and write a strongly worded letter to the restaurant's owner about this policy.
Reply:They can charge what they like. However this does seem unreasonable. I'd book another restaurant.
Reply:unfortunately, it is, but you do have choices....shop around for a better deal....they're out there....this may be a ''hot shot'' restaurant %26amp; the one you really want to go to on Easter, but if they are going to be chicken-s**t about it, I'd take my business elsewhere....good luck.
Reply:I think that the deposit and the ID is enough. I wouldn't fax anyone my credit card. They can ask for a deposit but that isn't full payment. I think I would have them investigated and take my event somewhere else.
Reply:For a huge day like Easter, I can imagine they get a bunch of reservations for which deadbeats do not show up. I think photo ID is a bit much... are they going to hold it up to you when you arrive to make sure you are you?!

If it ruffles your feathers, go elsewhere. HOtels often have very nice buffets.
Reply:that wasn t a deposit, deposit is a percentage of what u r going to pay, mostly less than 50%! I ll book another retaurant!
Reply:Sure is. And I don't blame them. When large parties don't show or don't pay or pay with a fraudulent credit card for prime holiday events, it really hurts the small business restaurant owners.

So if you intend to show up and pay them through legitimate means, why is it a problem? I can understand a little concern about security by sending personal credit info over a fax in this day and age of identity theft, so if that is worrying you, just go to the restaurant and do this in person.
